What We Can Learn from Mystery Google

mysteryDo you know what Mystery Google is?

Mystery Google is a unique search website, also known as Mystery Seeker. The concept is unique. You search for something, but you get the result of other people’s queries. So you don’t know what you’ll get.

Yesterday, I read Jim Hardin’s article explaining about Mystery Google. My curiosity asked me to see it for myself.

After visiting, I couldn’t say that my first impression was good.

The unique concept was ruined by the poor placement of two gigantic Chitika ads: a 300×250 button on the right part and a 728×90 on the bottom.

It somehow gave me an impression of carelessness (in layout design) and sounds like a huge billboard announcing “I just want money!!”.

I mean, there are lots of better ad placements, why choose such poor one? For example, it will be great to put only the bottom ad and center everything.

It’s not a problem to put ads in the page if they are well placed on the layout. Decent positioning of ads can also increase the sense of professionalism and makes people feel comfortable of staying for a while. We must not forget, people will click ads only if they feel comfortable to.

Well, what we bloggers can learn from this case is we need be careful with placement of ads. Poor one can make bad impression for new visitors. If visitors are not comfortable with our ads, they are not likely to be comfortable of staying long, let alone clicking.

You are right about ad placement. That one sure does scream give me money. Sure I place ads on my site but its for items that I believe in. Why did they need to put ads on this site anyways. The last time I looked at google they didn’t have big screaming ads.

Hey thanks for mentioning me. I appreciate it :)

Well, if the background is white like Google, I guess someone will say “The background color is not harmonious with the theme of mystery, not good” ;-)

You’re welcome buddy. If our layout, including ads, is comfortable, people will have no problem of visiting again in future. That is good.

There are, however, some self-proclaimed experts who will tell you that a blog or site made up of only adverts or “reviews” is a viable business model. Does anyone have experience of such a blog?

I’ve seen some of them. I say the site is like a ’sea’ of ads. Not comfortable to stay long. That is not good.

I searched for my own site, so my address is on the database. When someone randomly get my search query, he might get curious about the address and visit it ;-)
