Why You Should Monitor Your Link Popularity

Posted on 21. Dec, 2009 by Isaac Yassar in Blogging

linksHello there!

When was the last time you checked your link popularity?

As we know, link popularity represents the fame of a web address in term of number and spread of links, compared to other sites in the internet. Its algorithm is based on the indexing of major search engines.

Why should we monitor our link popularity?

1. Progress

Knowing that our blog is keep making progress is good. Link popularity is a nice and exact way to monitor the growth of our blogs. The more popular our link becomes, the better for SEO.

2. Passion

Monitoring the growth of our link popularity is a fun thing to do. It helps us in enjoying blogging and grow our passion there. Passion is very important for us in reaching our goals in blogging, either monetized one or just as a hobby.

How to check link popularity?

To check your link popularity, I recommend using a free tool from SubmitExpress.com . The good part is that there is no captcha to fill. You can just use the tool directly.

To use it, click here.

This tool allows you to check up to 3 domains for their link popularity. So you can compare your site with others’ too in one click.

In the result page, we can compare our link popularity with plenty of other sites with various level of popularity. And of course, Google has the highest level of popularity out there.

However, adding www and not are counted as different domains. If you are unsure, just check the two versions of your domain, with www and not.

From my experience, link popularity changed every 5-7 days of period. So we can’t check everyday and expect some significant changes.

If we actively publish new posts and leave our links on the internet (via commenting, social media, etc), our link popularity will grow steadily. Both dofollow and nofollow links improve our link popularity.

Try the tool buddy ;-)

Hmm…interesting. It would appear that the three ways to get to my site would make a difference:

    submitexpress.com/cgi-bin/linkpoptest/popular.pl?url1=leifandersen.net&url2=www.leifandersen.net&url3=leifandersen.wordpress.com&email=

not surprisingly, leifandersen.wordpress.com is 72, leifandersen.net is 130ish, and I was really surprised to see http://www.leifandersen.net was about 500.

Well, I wasn’t surprised that the leifandersen.wordpress.com blog had so few links, I did very little promoting of it until I got my own domain name. But I was surprised about the difference that the www made. Still this is an interesting tool, do you know how it gets it’s links?

As far as I know, from major search engines. The more our links indexed in search engines, the higher our link popularity.

Great tool! It’s the first time I’ve gotten a clear picture of who is linking to my site. 39 sites linking in, for a total of 808 links. Better than I expected.

Does that help to explain why my site, with little traffic, has a PR 4? (At least according to PageRank Checker.)

On the other hand, what does PR really represent? It can’t be that important. In another post you shared the “secret” of how you labored in the WP Forum to get a PR 4 (with your wonderful site). My humble site has achieved the same PR!

I’ll continue watching link popularity as a progress measure. It seems more valid than PageRank. Thanks for illuminating a piece of the puzzle.

You’re welcome. Yes, I believe the links has something to do with your PR.

And IMO, it’s hard to define the real meaning of Google PageRank because there are many hidden algorithms related to it (hidden to avoid abuse). But as far as I know, Google aims to give good ranks to sites with valuable contents, not the sites with super-smart webmasters (in SEO) and no value.

It’s good advice if you focus on a handful of sites. Not that practical for multiple sites/blogs management. Just not enough hours in the day…

Yeah. If we have too many blogs to take care, we can end up with none of them become really meaningful or big because we can’t devote enough time to grow it.

    Isaac,

This is an amazing tool that you shared with us. I have a wordpress.com blog so my score is rather low. That’s ok it gives me something to strive for.

    Thanks!

Hi Will. Welcome to my humble site. Btw, the tool’s result changes everyday if our site keeps growing. But the change is not very significant compared to its weekly change, of course ;-)

It’s been awhile since I have checked my link popularity. Honestly, I haven’t thought too much about it… I have a good amount of traffic incoming from Google, and a flow of regular visitors, so I just assume that means that I must be doing well in search engines and kind of let that be.

I think it’s normal. Google always give less links then the others. Perhaps they omit some similar links, just like in their search results.

Unlike Yahoo and MSN, Google does not always display all your backlinks. SubmitExpress.com is just one way of checking. You should really check your incoming links through various methods to get a wider scope of just who is linking to your blog. EX: Technorati, Google Blogsearch, etc

Thanks for the suggestions Rose. For me, Submit Express is just for fun. I’m not really interested in checking the real link number. I prefer building content and hang out here and there :-)

The end result of a blogger’s efforts is more important than any ranking given by a tool. For you Isaac, if you are happy with the discussions that your posts cause, then that is what counts. For a commercial blog, the income generated is what matters. As a few people have said, the results these tools give, page rank etc are influenced by so many factors.
