How to Make Money from Blogging

Posted on 17. Dec, 2009 by Isaac Yassar in Blogging

monetizeHi fellas!

The idea of make money blogging is compelling for lots of people, wrong?

A while ago a dear buddy of mine asked me a simple question that matters: how to make money from blogging? He keeps failing in trying to make money from blogging.

Based on my experience of making a few hundreds of dollars from blogging, I answered simple: it doesn’t work that way.

Why? Because I think that the question is not very representative as a basic concept. It symbolizes the wrong mindset of blogging that doesn’t lead to the right track.

We have to remember that there are the word “blogging” in the phrase “make money blogging”. It does mean something.

Regardless of monetized or not, blogging is an activity that can run well or not. Blogging runs well when we write ideas or information on articles and the message is successfully delivered to other people, say the readers.

I mention it because making money from blogging needs a well running blog, no bargain. In other words, our blog needs to run well first before we can make any penny from it.

In my thoughts, here are some simple characters of a blog that runs well:

  • New articles are published regularly.
  • The articles are original.
  • The quality of articles is good.
  • Having some loyal readers.
  • Good writer-reader interaction in comments.
  • Etc.

Who is responsible for those points? The blogger, you. It’s like what Captain Jack Sparrow said:

“It’s about what a man can do, and what a man can’t do.”

Regarding running a blog well, can or can’t depends on our ability as blogger. The point is, to run a blog well, we need some abilities. If we are serious about it, we got to think about developing our skills and ability.

“The greatest prize of becoming a millionaire is not the money, but the kind of person you need to be to become a millionaire in the first place”

Blogging is like business. Before we make good amount of profit from it, we got to make it run well first.

So I advised my buddy: if you are to make money from blogging, blog well first, monetize it later. That is how it works. That is the right mindset.

Yep.. that’s right. Good article. I have to build up my blog first before i monetizing it, the problem is: it’s not quite easy to focus on one thing while you’re an explorer. That’s my problem. Sometimes i feel so eagerly to write a post in my blog, hope there’s someone read my post, but in other time i just feel run out of topic. Hehehe.. Btw, I’ll keep trying build up my blog :D

Thanks buddy. Perhaps a personal blog will suit you well. You can write everything you’ve explored there. Like our friend Burhan 04, he has a nice personal blog on wordpress.com . He got lots of comments there.

However, personal blog is perfect for expressing ourselves, not for professional make money blogging.

That’s quite of tough choice for you to make ;-)

Btw I’m setting up my personal blog this afternoon. I always want to express my voice on social events. Like what I just did on FB this morning

    Hi,
Can’t say how much your articles are changing my perception about blogging. I have been writing articles for other people, even now,and I asked myself if I could also try the enigma ‘blogging’. I did it a couple of weeks ago and as much as I’m yet to earn anything, I feel much better writing my own articles. Thanks so much for the inspiration. You might have changed my life.
    Thanks again.

This is the thing which can be easily available everywhere? I feel every blogger will earn money only when the blog is visited by the people arrived from the search engine, If your are getting more and more visitors from reference commenting on other blogs, then definitely those visitors are genuine bloggers who never clicks your ads and ppc and affiliate links. SO getting visitors from search engine is all about earning money online.

Anyway, when I browse your blog I feel there is something distract me. And I realize it is your animated favicon which distract my attention to your article. but your animated header is cool.

Thanks for the feedback buddy. Yeah, I just tested it. On a single tab it does nothing much, but on three tabs it looks like a choir, quite silly. I guess I’ll stop its blinking.

Probably yes. That’s why we need passion in blogging. How can we stand years of working if we don’t enjoy the process? ;-)

Newbies asking “how to make money from blogging” is like asking “how to make money as an attorney” when you’re just starting out in Law school…

First, you need the education [knowledge/skill]. Then get the diploma [proof you know what you're talking about/results]. Then go out there in the field and generate your cash… :)

Hummm interesting point being made here. I have to agreed! In order to make money blogging you have to have a skill that someone is looking for. You have to provide value. Once you do that with the right passion the money can’t help but to come in.

Point well made. First establish yourself, show what you can offer, then monetize your blog. Most people want to make money from their blog, before they even have 2 posts on their blog. I know we all need and want to make money, but sometimes its smarter to give up nickel and cents to make it possible to make dollars latter on. Thanks for the great article Isaac.

You’re welcome buddy. Yeah, without the right way we can’t make money from blogging. Success needs hard work on the right track, not the wrong track.

Take my thought with at least a grain of salt (maybe two) because making money on the web has so far eluded me but I’m still pursuing this general plan…

My belief is that “content is king”. I’ve built a hosted web directory around that principle so that, hopefully, webmasters will make money a little at a time for what they contribute while they use it to receive traffic too.

Yeah, content is truly the king. That is my approach too. I apply it here on my blog. The great side of this approach is that if we keep writing original content, we will develop better and better. We are the key to make a great blog.

This was a very interesting discussion. I don’t think anyone would argue that content is not the most important part of a blog, but if you want to make money the topic must be of interest to a lot of potential readers. A blog about the rate at which snow melts when the temperature reaches 1 degree above freezing might not be a winner.
