SEO on WordPress Permalink, Have You?

Posted on 07. Jul, 2009 by Isaac Yassar in WordPress

linkHi buddy!

Do you realize that when you start your WordPress site, the default settings of the famous platform automatically define your link paths as “http://your-site.com/?p=xx” in format? Where the “xx” refers to numbers from 1, 2, 3, and so on (depending on how many pages you have). You know something? That’s bad.

My friend, this type of permalink is not effective according to Search Engine Optimizations (SEO) rules, you know. Why? Because you should put keywords to your permalink to make your site search engine friendly and later on getting top-notch traffic and visitors.

So, how to enhance the permalink better and more effective for Mr. SEO? Very simple, just visit your WordPress dashboard, go to Settings >> Permalinks. You will find some options to change the structure of your permalinks there. I suggest using “Month and name” because it is good for SEO and archiving. If you are quite techie, feel free to create your custom path.

This is a simple but very important SEO hack on WordPress , folks. But there is one more thing:  if you have already used the default option (the one with numbers) for a while, say you have many indexed posts / pages, it will be difficult for you to alter from the default setting. You see, it’s like a lose-lose situation, since if you keep using that form of permalink, you will hurt your SEO in long term. If you want to change it, then you can lose your search engines indexing and visitors.

That is why this tips is better for new sites fellas. If your site is old and there is too many things at stake, you can implement it in your next site. If you consider the change to be worthy, go for it. If not, forget it. Simple.

By the way, what kind of permalink structure you use? Why? Feel free to use the comment form people :-)

Very interesting post. I am new at blogging and my blog is relatively new. I think I may change my permalinks. Well maybe I will think about it.

    Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for your sharing sriganesh and hpguru. I think it’s good for SEO as long as not the numeric type ;-)
